Background

During his final years back at Esterhazy, Haydn was commissioned to compose a series of six masses to honour the name day of Maria Ermenegild, the Princess Liechenstein, wife of the new Prince Esterhazy. The Missa in Angustiis (Mass in troubled times) is the third of these, known to British audiences as the Nelson Mass because it was performed in 1802 (a brief period of continental peace) as Nelson travelled through Hungary on his way home from Naples. in company with Sir William and Lady Hamilton.
