Background

Mozart composed two settings of the Vespers texts in Salzburg.  The first, known as the Vesperae de Dominica, K321, was produced in 1779.  The second, the Vesperae solennes de confessore, K339 appeared the following year, and was his final composition for Salzburg.

The four soloists generally sing as an ensemble, the major exception being the fifth movement Laudate Dominum, a beautiful soprano aria which has become the best-known part of the work.
