Edward Hawkins read music at King's College, London, studying trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music. He graduated in 2001 and played with various orchestras and ensembles across the UK, making a number of recordings. He started singing at the age of 26, studying privately with Russell Smythe, Raymond Connell and Gary Coward.

In 2015 he joined the chorus at Glyndebourne, singing solo roles in Hamlet (Dean) and Cendrillon (Massenet) During this period he covered several parts including Mozart (Second Armed Man Magic Flute); Beethoven (Rocco Fidelio); Verdi (Sparafucile Rigoletto) and Stravinsky (Trulove The Rake's Progress).

He joined English Touring Opera in 2019, his early roles including Doctor Macbeth.

Later roles with English Touring Opera: Handel (Achilla Giulio Cesare, Claudio Agrippina); Bach (Bass St John Passion); Rossini (Alidoro La cenerentola, Lord Sidney Il viaggio a Reims); Verdi (Banquo Macbeth); Rimsky-Korsakov (General Polkan Golden Cockerel); Puccini (Geronte Manon Lescaut). He also covered parts by Monteverdi (Seneca L'incoronazione di Poppea) and Stravinsky (Trulove The Rake's Progress).

Additional appearances include: Opera Collective Ireland (Cadmus/Somnus Semele);  GAP Festival (Figaro The Marriage of Figaro); Wild Arts (Sarastro Magic Flute).
