Paul Charles Clarke studied at the Royal College of Music, winning the 1989 Kathleen Ferrier Competition.

In the UK he works regularly with several companies, including WNO (Fenton, Alfredo, Don Carlos, Faust, Rodolfo, and Pinkerton); with Scottish Opera (Alfredo, Duke of Mantua and Des Grieux in Manon); and Cassio, Tybalt, Alfredo and Jeník at the Royal Opera House.

He sings frequently in the USA, at Minnesota, Dallas, Seattle, Santa Fe, Cincinnati, Houston and Miami. At the New York Met he has appeared as Jeník, Roméo, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Kudrjaš, Jaquino, Cassio and Pinkerton. He has also appeared at Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Hamburg and Frankfurt. His many other roles include Nemorino, Macduff, Tamino, Anatol (Barber's Vanessa), Edgardo, Gabriele Adorno, Werther and Don José.
