Tommaso Banchieri.
Born Bologna, 3 September 1568.
Died Bologna 1634.
Italian composer.
Tommaso Banchieri (who adopted the name Adriano on taking holy orders in 1590) was a renowned organist and composer of madrigals. His contribution to the development of opera is in the form of the commedia madrigalesca, something of a hybrid form, perhaps akin to the song cycle, though with narrative elements derived from commedia dell'arte. The first of these was La pazzia senile of 1598.
