Sinfonia was founded in 1970 by Neil Mantle, and over the next thirty years built an excellent reputation for the performance of large-scale repertoire, notably Strauss and Mahler. From 1994 the Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh was used as a venue for concerts, which featured regularly in the programme of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
