The Carl Rosa company was always on the lookout for promising new material from the Continent. In 1876, Ponchielli had at last hit the jackpot with his masterpiece, La gioconda. It was therefore an enterprising idea to go for this earlier work, derived from Manzoni's great novel, one of the most important works of recent Italian literature.
It was also quite unusual for the company to launch a new production in Edinburgh.
