Faust was chosen regularly by Glasgow Grand, and had also been performed almost annually by the recently defunct Carl Rosa company. That organization's conductor, Arthur Hammond, must have found the SNO to be a rather better orchestra than the ones he had usually had to knock into shape on his earlier touring dates.
The unusual work paired with it during the week was another rare piece of middle-period Verdi, Luisa Miller.
