Mozart's singspiel had been reintroduced to the modern British repertoire by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1910, and it was revived regularly thereafter, becoming a popular work both at Glyndebourne and the early Edinburgh Festivals.
Of this cast, tenor Lyon Mackie had begun singing principal roles in the D'Oyly Carte company, but was successful with Mozart. Joseph Griffin's career went the other way, and between the wars he spent several years with D'Oyly Carte.
Cast details are from a programme in the Mitchell Library.
