It must be around thirty years since the Festival put on Elijah with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming. , with a thoroughly enjoyable recording following.
This team was also very promising. It seems odd that baritones who tackle Elijah should alo take on big Wagner roles. Terfel certainly sang Wotan with great success for several years, and Christopher Maltman recently tackled the part at Covent Garden. Karen Cargill is, of course, very much a local favourite, and ideal for the alto part.
