Having completed another series of Ring performances last year, the troupers of EPOG now make a further detour into Straussian territory. Scottish Opera only gave the local premiere of Daphne as recently as 2023. That was an impressively presented concert performance that made an excellent case for the work.

It is highly enterprising of the EPOG stalwarts, now back in the refurbished Portobello Town Hall, to tackle this opera.  They have taken on Salome and Elektra in previous years, so another Strauss one-acter with big orchestral forces was a logical follow-up.  It was also impressive that their team of solo singers was willing to learn such a rare piece - it does not often appear even at German houses.

Orchestral rehearsals began as usual on Thursday with the musicians working intensively through Friday and Saturday.  The full run through (essentially a concert performance) followed at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

Well worth the detour to Portobello for anyone who wants to explore this beautiful rarity.  The audience is not restricted to 'friends and family' - other hangers-on are always made very welcome.
