Having completed another series of Ring performances last year the troupers of EPOG now make a further detour into Straussian territory. Scottish Opera only gave the local premiere of Daphne as recently as 2023. That was a beautifully presented concert performance that made an excellent case for the work.
It is highly enterprising of the EPOC stalwarts, now back in the refurbished Portobello Town Hall, to tackle the work. They have taken on Salome and Elektra in previous years, so another Strauss one-acter with big orchestral forces is a logical follow-up, assuming their team of solo singers is willing to learn such a rare work.
Orchestral rehearsals begin as usual on Thursday and the players work intensively through Friday and Saturday, with a full run through at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Well worth the detour to Portobello for anyone who wants to explore this beautiful rarity.
