Massenet's charming adaptation of the familiar story has been seen at the Conservatoire in Glasgow and in a staging by Fife Opera in Kirkcaldy. It is good to see it reaching the capital in the hands of the enthusiastic student company, long a champion of unusual repertoire.
It was a further bonus that the Prince was cast as a trouser role with a mezzo, as Massenet intended. That does, of course, fit in with the British panto tradition. As long as the tenor is a sweet-toned one that version can work.
The opera still awaits a fully professional performance in Scotland.
