Opera singers from Scotland's international conservatoire are performing in Benjamin Britten's comic work, Albert Herring. A truly amusing work, it is being staged in Glasgow by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) and will visit Perth too, being staged at Perth Concert Hall at 7.15pm on Friday 25th March. Albert Herring has not been staged in Scotland for some years, so this venture deserves to be encouraged. Those who were lucky enough to see one of their performances of Cunning Little Vixen know what a treat lies in store.
The last performances of Herring in Scotland are believed to be three at the Perth Festival in 1998 (May 22, 27, 30) conducted and directed by John Currie and performances by the British Youth Opera at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre (conducted by Timothy Dean) on Sept 11 and 14 1996.
The Scottish Opera production from 1966 which was regularly revived is still fondly remembered by older opera lovers.
