“Ever been young, poor and in love?”
Scottish Opera’s copywriter repeatedly hits the mark, and this iconic opera gives us ‘just what it says on the tin’, being the story of the love affair between Mimi and the struggling writer Rodolfo. The welcome return of an audience favourite, Tony award-winning director Stewart Laing’s production presents a traditional tale in a persuasive contemporary context – the exciting modern art scene of 21st century New York. The production got enthusiastic reviews when it was last put on. The Daily Mail and The List awarded five stars, the Guardian giving four, describing it as “An involving and defiantly different take on a familiar masterpiece”. It is over one hundred and ten years since La bohème was first staged in Scotland. It is one of the most frequently performed and therefore familiar operas. Yet there are always people in the audience hearing it for the first time, and conductors and companies who can make it come up as if it is being performed for the first time. Don’t miss seeing this staging.
