Over ten years ago, a remarkable entrepreneur, Peter Mulloy, set out to revive the brand of Carl Rosa Opera, renowned in its day for taking opera to the masses at popular prices.
Operating without subsidy, Peter found a gap in the market - supplying the market with operetta, and Gilbert and Sullivan works in particular. He aimed from the outset to offer audiences good entertainment with a full orchestra and a blend of singers young and experienced.
Given the recent economic downturn, Peter had to retrench, but the word is that later next year, Carl Rosa Opera Ltd is planning to take to the road again. We are told that a revival of The Mikado and a new production of The Sorcerer are under consideration. Let us hope a Scottish theatre can be found willing to showcase these enjoyable works.
