By now the last weekend in September is one of the fixed dates in the operatic calendar in Scotland - it is when the Edinburgh Players' Opera Group rehearse, then give a concert performance of one of Wagner's operas in Portobello Town Hall. This year it is the turn of Parsifal. The final 'performance' on Sunday 30 September is open to friends and relations of the performers and indeed any member of the public. There is a voluntary charge of £15 to cover expenses. Many of the soloists are names familiar from previous years. Jonathan Finney is Parsifal, Gerard Delrez Gurnemanz, with Kundry sung by Elaine McKrill, Titurel Colin Heggie, Amfortas Andrew Mayor and Klingsor Nicholas Fowler. It is always fun to spot some 'weel-kent' faces in the orchestra which is conducted as usual by by Mike Thorne with leader Iain Scott. The 'performance'starts at 10.30, the day concludes at 5pm, with intervals between the acts of sixty and thirty minutes respectively. Recommended.
